Mar 25, 2010 - with this clearer version its wonderful to hear Teschemacher. Wittrisch is better than about anyone in this duet. I've listened to this gem for 40+ years and imo its not going to be equaled - - has to be one of the greatest operatic recordings of all time.

EdmundStAustell Comenta:

Apr 8, 2010 - Excellent! Wonderful voices, exciting singers! Thank you for doing your bit to insure the survival of this gem. And for contributing to the triumph of memory over tragedy.

Apr 22, 2010 - Taschemacher was a great soprano and wittrisch triumphed in almost all kinds of music!

BRENDANGCARROLL Comenta:

Apr 23, 2010 - Absolutely!

Jul 28, 2010 - While the German text might give some pause, the elegant style and dramatic imagination of the singers brings this wonderful music fully to life. Sung like this, Meyerbeer's success in his own time makes complete sense: he wrote only for the finest singers.

meltzerboy Comenta:

Jul 28, 2010 - I remember this recording very well; I first heard it on an LP devoted to Meyerbeer, with liner notes by the late George Jellinek. It is widely known by collectors as one of the most thrilling ever made. The language matters much less when the singing is of this caliber. Wittrisch is of the Tauber school most definitely. Thanks, AE, for forwarding and thanks to BRENDANGCARROLL for posting.

AulicExclusiva Comenta:

Jul 29, 2010 - I did not know Mr George Jellinek had died last January, and I am sad. He was a very knowlegeable and wise connoisseur of singing and records, and a perfect gentleman.

Nov 20, 2010 - I heard this duet on the Vocal Scene, George Jellinek's program in NY. It was electrifying then. Time has nor dimmed its brilliance. Bravo!

BRENDANGCARROLL Comenta:

Nov 20, 2010 - You are most welcome. It is an astonishing performance.

Nov 24, 2010 - There are NO singers TODAY who can match Wittrisch and Teschemacher, INDEED NOT FOR A LONG WHILE

rupepill Comenta:

Nov 30, 2010 - Hearing this duet I wonder whether Rudolf Friml might have been inspired by the short passage about 3:45 and repeated later, for his composition of The Donkey Serenade. Apart from that idle thought, what splendid performances by these remarkable singers and how fine a recording (and remastering?).

gmmix Comenta:

Feb 23, 2011 - Small world! George Jellinek's program is where I first heard this recording. I went to great trouble to record some 200 Vocal Scene programs on cassette tapes which wound up in the attic. Wittrisch's vocalizing, especially in the 2nd half of this video, is absolutely glorious. He caresses each and every note. Thanks to BRENDANGCARROLL for this splendid posting.

Mar 4, 2011 - What a duo!!!! So different from the classic Corelli Simionato in Italian but the two pairs have equal power and energy.

BRENDANGCARROLL Comenta:

Mar 5, 2011 - Mr Wittrisch has the greatest top D ever recorded in my opinion.

Orfeus80 Comenta:

Mar 5, 2011 - it's phenomenal for sure!

numetutelare Comenta:

Mar 6, 2011 - Wittrisch fu il tenore preferito da Hitler... ed in questo caso aveva ragione.
