I've been using Linux as my exclusive OS at home and my primary OS at work (also use a Mac at work) for over 10 years. The only area that comes to mind as having a lack of Linux software is gaming, and even there it's mostly FPS, I think. But I don't care about gaming on computers, I have a game console for that. For everything else - office suites, email, web, etc., Linux has as many choices as Windows, maybe more.
