Jul 27, 2007 - Again, I must disagree. IMO, even here Sutherland's singing is superior to Sills'. One of the extraordinary things about Sutherland's voice was that despite the fact it was a big voice, her agility was phenomenal. A similar situation existed in the case of Tetrazzini. Also, having a "covered" sound is not an acquired taste, but an important part of good singing to prevent an excessively white or bleating voice. Galli-Curci spoke about this, and her voice was also "covered."

Jul 27, 2007 - Sutherland was indeed La Stupenda!!! The dress, thou, has nothing of stupendo! LOLOL =) Great singing

Jul 27, 2007 - This dress was part of the Sutherland auction at Sotheby's in Feb. 1995. The catalogue describes it as a Barbara Matera gown (circa 1980) with a cape for a "beetle-wing effect"

Aug 2, 2007 - Sutherland´s singing was never superior to Sills´. Nor do I believe that a covered sound is an important part of good singing as so many great singers did not resort to this technique. The main problem I have with Joan´s sound is her constant striving for pretty tones that rendered her singing ultimately pointless and boring. She was not a well-rounded performer either, as her acting skills left a lot to be desired. But that´s a whole different matter.

Aug 3, 2007 - "Dem's fightin' words," but I don't feel like fighting, so I'll leave it to others who read your post to debate the merits and demerits of Sutherland and Sills. I respect your opinion as I hope you respect mine, and obviously, as I think you already pointed out, neither of us is going to persuade the other to cross sides. Let's at least appreciate both these great singers.

CoreyLeig Comenta:

Aug 3, 2007 - ha ha, you are right, we are both quite settled in our respective positions, no point in trying to convert each other. I certainly respect your opinion, in fact, it´s a pleasure to read your comments on different singers when I happen to come across them. It´s clear you love the soprano voice, as I do. Different divas touch us in different ways, it all boils down to that. I have a tremendous respect for Joan also, don´t get me wrong, she was undeniably an exceptionally gifted singer.

Jan 6, 2008 - search Rita Shane if you want to hear a performance even MORE dazzling than this one. Shane's ornaments are superior and simply stunning. RITA SHANE. check her out.

Jan 20, 2008 - Sills singing was never superior to Sutherland and Sills either. I hate when people put one voice ahead of another in the case of greats like the two of them were. It's not a good thing. All performers can be enjoyed...well not ALL, but all of the greats at least.

CharlotteinWeimar Comenta:

Mar 9, 2008 - Be knocked over by the 1960 Joan Sutherland performance with her huge voice in radiant form, and rejoice that there are still a handful other singers around capable of even singing the notes.

CharlotteinWeimar Comenta:

Mar 9, 2008 - This is still fantastic. She was 56 in 1982 with 22 more arduos years "on the clock". Not many people have careers that long with voices still in such good order. There is no point in looking here for deep psychological drama, Joan sings in a way that is true to her own personality, open honest and delightful.

Jun 27, 2008 - Rita Shane's is much better.. her sound is clear.

Jun 11, 2009 - i mean rita shane is amazing.

Jul 16, 2009 - Truly wonderful singing from any one at any age. You can hear the echo in the hall that gives a clue as to how big that voice was. How lucky we are to have had her in our lives.

Aug 9, 2009 - bravo bravo !!!!! considering his age, did a wonderful job in this difficult aria.

Apr 2, 2010 - All the comparisons to Sills amuse me, Sutherland was truly world famous for good reason- people all over the world wanted to see her, whereas Sills was not. She may have been well known in America, but that's it.

Mar 3, 2011 - wow... still at this later age... such a BIG strong voice, large and musical in the whole range... and that coloratura! Bravo Dame Joan. What a lesson...

Jun 3, 2011 - Any idea how much it went for? I love this gown ^_^

OperaMystery80 Comenta:

Jun 17, 2011 - Beautifully sung but I've noticed that in so many recitals and concerts, Sutherland wore the same type of GREEN dress. Why was that ? She needed some serious fashion help and more creativity and variety. It's like she had a closet with basically the same dress LOL

Hako2004 Comenta:

Sep 26, 2011 - The human instinct is always best, as Pavarotti said, and Dame Joan's voice was experienced as a super nova amongst many smaller comets of her day. History will record how long she was talked about, compared to, and remembered when many others faded from memory.

ChristophePhilippe Comenta:

Oct 31, 2011 - Barbara Madera probably physically made the dress (no small feat), but it's likely that Jose Verona designed it. This is just a guess based on the fact that Jose Verona designed most of her dresses.

Oct 31, 2011 - This is an interesting document--how often have we seen Bonynge accompany his wife at the piano? Not often.
