May 25, 2009 - Hispanos are run all the time during airshows @Rhinebeck, NY. It's the Rhone rotary engines that are getting hard to see/hear/smell....

Jul 29, 2009 - Shame the Hisso was so finicky. When the USAS Aero Squadrons switched from NE 28s to Spads, availability dropped from 95% to like 53% because of engine problems.

Aug 15, 2009 - do you have to use the clutch when you shift an airplane?
GGigabiteM Comenta:
Nov 25, 2009 - They don't have transmissions like a car, the propeller is bolted directly on the engine and the speed is adjusted with the engine throttle. Some engines of that period had reduction gears, but they were often unreliable and could end in catastrophic failure such as the propeller parting company from the plane.

Dec 27, 2009 - Interesting technique in the Spad - pulling the prop the wrong to start it. Never seen that before. Does it simply bounce back from the compression or does it start by 'backfiring"?

Aug 17, 2010 - two things i like to know. First, was that SPAD a 7 or a 13 and Second were the markings on it Italian,Spanish, or some other nation? Just curious. Thanx lots.

Aug 29, 2010 - Spad's colours look French to me.
TheSV3 Comenta:
Nov 4, 2010 - you're right about it being French. The tail ii red-white-blue from right to left but until i stopped it at 1:30 and saw the wing roundels, the white looked yelllowish to me on my screen. That's why it looked Spanish and i asked. Thax Zebred2001. I assume its a 13.

May 4, 2011 - Are these replicas or the readl deal?
memorialflight Comenta:
May 21, 2011 - This Spad is the world's unique airworthy original Spad XIII. It was built in 1918 by the Kellner company near Paris. The Se5a is a replica built in the 1990s in England and completed by Memorial Flight a few years ago. For more information, please visit our website

Jun 6, 2011 - I'd be afraid to swing the prop by hand. Give me a hucks starter any day!

Jul 13, 2011 - The SPAD XIII is by far my favorite WWi single seat fighter. This was true even before I knew Ed Rickenbacker, who helped me in painting Frank Lukes SPAD in 1/28th.
GGigabiteM Comenta:
Aug 29, 2011 - Yeah, no. The SE5a and SPADs used Hispano-Suiza v8s, which are vee engines. The HS8 has a full throttle, which you seem to be confusing with rotary engines. Early rotary engines had blipmags, but later ones had throttles. Waiting too long between blips was more likely to cause the engine to explode than not do anything due to excessive fuel buildup.

Nov 20, 2011 - What is the Se5 pilot doing during the first start-up? His hand is outside the cockpit cranking on something.
memorialflight Comenta:
Nov 21, 2011 - In order to start the engine you need to crank the "starting magneto". On the Se5a, this magneto is placed just outside the cockpit. When the engine is running, the two "classic" magnetos are taking over.
